What Is Marketing Strategy?

A marketing strategy is a business's overall game plan for building a strong brand and culture that will turn their target audience into real life customers of the product or service that the business provides. The marketing strategy of a company contains the company’s brand identity, brand values, key marketing messages, their competitors successes and failures in building relationships with that same audience, information on the target customer and other high-level elements.

The marketing strategy informs the marketing plan, which is a document that lays out the types and timing of marketing activities. A company’s marketing strategy looks long into the future and carries with it the integrity and strength of the brands message, culture and design. These three components don’t change much over time and should be fundamentally done right the first time around!

The Creation of Marketing Strategy

Marketing strategy is the product of in depth marketing research. A long term strategy stems from a real understanding of the market your business is a part of, who your competitors are, what their successes and failures are and exactly what sets your brand apart from them. Through this fundamental market research - you will now have the tools and understanding to create a strong value proposition.

Your business’s value proposition is, in our opinion, the most important element of your brands overall marketing messaging. A value proposition tells your audience why they should do business with you rather than your competitors, and makes the benefits of your products or services crystal clear from the start.

Unfortunately, many businesses either bury their value proposition in corny slogans, flashy graphics or humor they think will be entertaining, or just don’t ever figure it out at all!

Walmart, for example, is a discount retailer with “everyday low prices,” and its business operations and marketing revolve around that. A company should never create a marketing strategy from scratch. The correct recipe is to start with the value proposition and distill the key marketing message(s) from that.
